The day I visited the Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul felt like the center of the universe. As I walked up, a classic car show was wrapping up in front and the legislature was in session.
I did not have full access to the rotunda because it was Somali Day at the Capitol. Minnesota has the largest Somali population in the United States, with many living in the Twin Cities region. Many arrived as refugees escaping civil war and famine to seek safety and peace here. People who overcome these horrors to come here, become American, and add their culture to the mix make America better. The festive atmosphere reflected their happiness to be here.
Located in downtown Saint Paul, the Minnesota State Capitol has the second-largest self-supported dome in the world (only St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican is larger). It was easy to reach; I parked in a nearby garage.

Despite the activity, I managed to get the undivided attention of a tour guide I met in the gift shop. She said she didn’t have any tours scheduled and offered to personally take me around. I normally use self-guided tours so I can go at my own pace. But having her point out a painting error on an arch made me appreciate the knowledge these tour guides bring (the photo is in the gallery below).
The Minnesota State Capitol is home to the Minnesota Governor and the Minnesota State Legislature, which consists of the Senate and House of Representatives. I was able to sit in both galleries and witness lawmakers in action.
The color scheme of the Minnesota State Legislature reflects the United Kingdom Parliament:
The House is green like the House of Commons (the lower house).
The Senate is red like the House of Lords (the upper house).
From the front of the capitol, you can clearly see the Cathedral of Saint Paul a short distance away. I enjoy visiting beautiful churches, and I recommend this one after your capitol tour. Adjoining Summit Avenue has some fine Victorian homes.
