Kentucky State Flag (Flagpedia)
Kentucky is one of my favorite states. You could stay for a couple of weeks and still never do everything. Fortunately for me, I have a friend in Lexington who helps me see the best that Kentucky has to offer, which includes the capital city, Frankfort.
Overlooking the Kentucky River and located in downtown Frankfort, the Kentucky State Capitol is as approachable as the city’s friendly residents. Learn more about the Kentucky State Capitol or plan your visit.
I first visited the Kentucky State Capitol with my friend in June 2016. This was long before I decided to visit them all, so I missed a lot and needed to revisit, especially to see the chambers of the Kentucky Senate and House of Representatives which make up the Kentucky General Assembly.
Sadly, my 2025 revisit did not yield much. Both chambers were stripped clean due to remodel, and the dome was completely covered in scaffolding. My big win of this trip was the gallery of dolls dressed as Kentucky First Ladies (and, in the case of the current governor, the family dog, which I always appreciate). One of the dolls is of the first female Kentucky Governor, Martha Layne Collins.
Fortunately, I’m in Kentucky…a lot. So I hope that on my next visit I’ll get to see the Senate and House in their full glory.
There are two things I remember most about my visit to the Kentucky State Capitol: the friendly people and The Floral Clock. The staff at the Kentucky State Capitol are tops in friendliness; a security guard even gave me and my friend a personalized tour.
Behind the building is The Floral Clock, a 34-foot working clock made of plants that are changed out seasonally. No other capitol building has anything like this.
After visiting the capitol, go see everything else that Frankfort has to offer. It is home to the historic Buffalo Trace Distillery and Rebecca Ruth Candy, inventor of the bourbon ball.
