The California State Capitol Park was a festive place the day I arrived on 25 May 2023.

At the time, the California State Legislature was working on Senate Bill 525, which would increase the minimum wage for health care workers to $25 per hour. It clearly worked, because SB 525 was signed into law in October 2023 with an ultimate October 2024 effective date.

I arrived as a protest march in support of the $25 minimum wage was underway around the capitol park. Complete with a party atmosphere and marching drum line, I concluded that Californians really know how to stage a protest. I found it very uplifting.

Just like the state itself, there is a lot to see at the California State Capitol Park, so make sure to allot a little more time than usual. Learn more about the California State Capitol Park history or plan your visit.

State Legislature

Since the California State Legislature was in session that day (it is one of only 10 full-time legislatures in the United State), it was as busy inside the building. The California State Assembly and Senate both meet there, and I was fortunate enough to see both in action from their respective galleries since both were on the floor at the same time.

The color scheme of the California State Legislature reflects the United Kingdom Parliament:

  • The Assembly is green like the House of Commons (the lower house).

  • The Senate is red like the House of Lords (the upper house).

Museum

The California State Capitol includes the California State Capitol Museum, which takes up most of the basement and first floors. The basement has a small gift shop; the best part is on the first floor, which has restored historic offices (mostly from around 1906) of the governor, secretary of state, and treasurer.

For those who need a history refresher, the big event in California at that time was the 18 April 1906 San Francisco Earthquake

Capitol Park

Arborists rejoice! The 40-acre Capitol Park features 1,140 trees of 200 different types donated from all over the world. Like men, I’m not an expert, but I love them. Additionally, the park includes 155 memorials to significant California people and events. Arrive on a good weather day, bring water, and take your time walking the grounds.
